LIVING WORD DEVOTIONAL

LIVING WORD DEVOTIONAL
MAY 24

BE GRACIOUS

There is one who speaks like the piercings of a sword, But the tongue of the wise promotes health. Proverbs 12:18

Have you ever taken time to consider the effect of the words you speak? Words are powerful things. They can cut and they can heal. There are those whose words pierce like swords and cause a lot of  harm and pain for others. Painful words have been used to hurt many relationships - especially marriages. Families and friendships have been torn apart by bitter words. Why?
Many of us were raised by parents and older people who were careless with the use of words. They used their words to insult and tear down our dignity. Many of us can look back to our childhood with pain as we remember the tears we shed when adults humiliated us with their words and disgraced us publicly. Although we are grown, we still feel hurt when we remember those days.
The question to consider is this: Since you became an adult, how have you also used your words? Have you allowed the pain of your past to shape your own behavior today?
Psychologists tell us that people who have been abused in the past tend to carry the marks of abuse into adulthood and end up repeating the abuses they experienced on others. Until we allow Christ to heal our past and deliver us from the pain of our childhood, we may end up doing to others what was done to us. When the Lord wants to heal us He starts with our heart for 'out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks.'
To find restoration in Christ, we must acknowledge our problem and ask Him to heal our hearts and touch our tongues with His love.

Prayer: Lord, heal the pain of my past and touch my tongue with your love.
