Despite the Electoral Commission’s (EC) readiness to hold elections on the first Monday of November if the constitutional amendment bill is successfully carried through, most Minority Members of Parliament appear unconvinced about the electoral body’s readiness and preparations.
This followed an almost three hour crunch meeting with the EC Chairperson, Charlotte Osei and Parliament’s Constitutional, Legal and Parliamentary affairs committee on Wednesday.
The meeting was meant to learn at first hand steps put in place to ensure the elections will be smooth if the Constitution (Amendment Bill), 2016 is approved by the House to change the elections date from December to first Monday of November in every election year.
With a gagging order, placed on the committee members from divulging details of the meeting to the press, Adom News sources say most of the minority MPs are not satisfied with the posture of the EC and believe there’s a rush to that effect.
With such a sharp disagreement among the members, the committee’s report will be debated on the floor after which a secret ballot will be taken during which two thirds majority are expected to ratify the approval.
And with a majority of some 152 MPs, the NDC government is expected to lobby the remaining 122 NPP MPs, a scenario which is highly unlikely at this stage casting doubts over the approval of the amendment.
Meanwhile, Parliament’s Appointments Committee is expected to vet three Deputy Ministerial nominations on Friday, the 22nd of July, 2016.
The three including Emmanuel Bombande for Foreign Affairs, John Oti Bless for Local Government and Joseph Agmor Tetteh as deputy Eastern region will be tested on their competence in handling the roles they have been assigned.
